COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II Issue 5

On Wednesday, May 3rd, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II Issue 5 was released from Boom Studios. Below you will find a preview of the issue as well as the main cover and variants.

FINAL ISSUE. Forbidden alliances collide as radically enhanced, mind blowing Zord combinations battle it out! Reunited friends face Krang as a true force to be reckoned with–but will it be enough to send him back to Dimension X?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“MMPR / TMNT II Issue 5 drops just shy of three years to the end of the first miniseries back in 2020. A lot has changed in three years: not only has the comics industry (mostly) recovered from the slowdowns of the pandemic, but writer Ryan Parrott and artist Dan Mora are better than they have ever been.

And just like the last miniseries, MMPR / TMNT II has maintained the staples of Power Rangers: fun dialogue, intense fights and quite a few surprises. Also… merchandising. Look, it’s no secret that Power Rangers is all about selling toys. The first mini-series gave us the Turtle Rangers, Shredder’s Green Ranger and a new Tommy and Foot soldier. Now, we get Mutant Rangers and the all new Dimension-X Rangers. Please Hasbro… fast track these to the Lightning Collection!

With the inclusion of General Krang to the mini-series comes the revelation in the miniseries that Dimension-X also had a team of Power Rangers. Rita used the Pink Dimension-X Morpher to turn Casey against all of his friends in the issue, not just a double agent, but fully mind controlled. This brings another layer of battle to an already packed issue. Not only do we get Rita and Casey against the Turtles’ Dimension-X forms, but Krang’s corrupted Dino Megazord versus Green Ranger Shredder’s Dragonzord and Alpha 5, yes, Alpha 5 piloting the Megazord-sized Metalhead!

Dan Mora’s art shines throughout this miniseries, but particularly in this issue. With multiple fights, both large and small, each panel is dynamic and all of the smallest details make every page pop with action. Ryan Parrott’s writing has amazing quips, great characterization and he knows the formula of what makes Power Rangers what it has been for 30 years. However, the formula is almost the same as the end of the previous crossover. You have the Dragonzord and Metalhead right there… you know what’s coming. There is a twist to the mega-sized fight however, with an interesting solution that involves the Mutant Rangers’ abilities and enforces Power Rangers’ biggest lesson: teamwork.

Fortunately, the issue ends with more character interactions and a solidifying friendship of the human and turtle teens. And… an intriguing setup for a THIRD crossover. For those readers that thought April got the short end of the bo-staff this miniseries, don’t worry – Ryan has you covered.

Let’s hope it doesn’t take another three years for the next one…”

NEWS – More Rangers from Across the Morphin Grid Rise Up this Summer at BOOM! Studios in POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: HYPERFORCE #1

More Rangers from Across the Morphin Grid Rise Up this Summer at BOOM! Studios in POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: HYPERFORCE #1
The HyperForce Rangers join the fight July 2023

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 19, 2023) – BOOM! Studios continues to celebrate the Rangers’ 30th Anniversary as prolific Power Rangers storyteller Melissa Flores (Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Radiant Pink) and acclaimed writer, media personality and voice of the HyperForce Pink Ranger in the HyperForce RPG,  Meghan Camarena (Radiant Pink, Radiant Black), along with artist Federico Sabbatini (Moon Knight, The Dead Lucky) and colorist Bryan Valenza (Witchblade, Ghost Rider), bring the fan-favorite HyperForce Rangers from the beloved TTRPG web-series to the page–for their first dedicated full-length story since their morphinominal first season in the POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: HYPERFORCE one-shot!

Mistress Vile, formerly known as Rita Repulsa, and Dark Specter have invaded the Morphin Grid! As the dark contagion spreads and puts the Rangers in their most vulnerable state yet, the HyperForce Rangers will have to scour the multiverse for as many unexpected allies as they can, while they’re pushed to their limits…

A writer/producer based in Los Angeles, Melissa worked as a creative executive for the Power Rangers brand for nearly a decade before transitioning to becoming a full-time writer. Her Image Comics series The Dead Lucky, a Massive-Verse title, released this year. She co-writes the Massive-Verse comic book miniseries Radiant Pink, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for BOOM! Studios and has also written for Marvel and Oni Press.

HYPERFOOORCE! It’s nearly impossible to put into words how excited I am to be revisiting the special group of chaotic misfits that is the HyperForce team with Meghan, Federico and BOOM! Studios,” said co-writer Melissa Flores. “I’ve never forgotten the incredible amount of love the TTRPG series received from the fans, and I’m so thankful to be able to pay back just a little bit of that with a new adventure for them in this medium.”

Meghan Camarena is a writer, host, and professional gamer based in Los Angeles. Her most recent works include co-creating and co-writing Radiant Pink, a Massive Verse title for Image Comics, as well as starring as the 25th Anniversary Pink Power Ranger, voicing Kimberly Hart in the Battle for the Grid video game, and working as a celebrated Internet personality, helping to shape the face of modern digital entertainment for the last 16 years. Meghan is set to release a series of new projects this year and is excited about her new endeavor with BOOM! Studios.

“WE DID IT! Hyperforce lives thanks to the incredible Melissa Flores, Frederico Sabbatini, and BOOM! Studios,” said co-writer Meghan Camarena. “Together, we’re telling the Hyperforce tale right where it left off and you’re never going to guess where it takes us. Thank you to the fans for always believing in these characters and waiting for us to finish the story. It’s meant so much to me to bring Chloe back to life and I can hardly wait for you to read what she’s been up to!”

Federico Sabbatini is a comic book artist living in Rome. He has worked for several publishing houses such as Marvel Comics (Moon Knight, Star Wars, The Amazing Spider-Man), Archie Comics, Aspen Comics, and recently for BOOM! Studios. He has illustrated several covers for Image Comics including Radiant Black, The Dead Lucky, and No/One.

“Working on Power Rangers is a dream come true! I’ve been a huge fan of the series since when I was a child and I wish I could tell the Federico of twenty years ago that this day was going to come,” said artist Federico Sabbatini. “Working with Melissa and Meghan was amazing, we are a great team!”

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: HYPERFORCE #1 features a standard cover by Keyla Valerio (Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger), with variants by fan-favorite artists Goñi Montes and InHyuk Lee.

Power Rangers Unlimited is such a fun title to work on, since we get to bring in beloved Power Rangers characters from across time and space… and from across different media!” said editor Allyson Gronowitz. “With HyperForce, I’m especially excited to spotlight a Rangers team that has as much wit and personality as their creators — who just so happen to be the enthusiastic writing duo on this monumental one-shot as well.”

Currently, Power Rangers is celebrating 30 continuous years on the air, making it one of the longest-running kids’ live-action series in television history, with over 900 episodes aired to date. Created by Haim Saban and launched in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the series celebrates its 30th year with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, an anniversary special exclusively available on Netflix now. The 30th overall season of Power Rangers, “Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury,” will premiere this Fall 2023 also exclusively on Netflix.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: HYPERFORCE is the newest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to critically acclaimed original series, including BRZRKR by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney; Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera; Once & Future by Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora; Eve by Victor LaValle and Jo Mi-Gyeong; The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade; Wynd by James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas; Grim by Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano; Briar by Christopher Cantwell and Germán García; Stuff of Nightmares by R.L. Ranger Command Power Hour Episode 215

It’s time to Ranger Up with @trekkieb47, @secretrangerfan & @ZachLaVoy as they talk all things Power Rangers on the Four Eyed Radio Network with RANGER COMMAND POWER HOUR!

Eric, A.P. and Zach are here with a SPOILER-FREE review of the Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Special – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always.

A huge thanks to Hasbro, eOne and Netflix for providing us with a Press Screener.

Here is Zach’s review:

I love how this special jumps right into the action and we’re quickly introduced to the new character Minh, played by Charlie Kersh. She fits right in with the cast and you feel the emotion behind every line she says.

The special moves at Lightning pace to tell a comprehensive story that lays out exactly what happened to the team, and the hurdles they must overcome in order to come out on top. Lots of great fight scenes, tons of heart, and a love for the original MMPR team tempered with fun easter eggs for the long time franchise fans. And while not every single plot hole is explained away, only the most hardcore lore hounds will notice. When in doubt, just remember the MST3K mantra “It’s just a show, I should really just relax.”

The updated effects look fantastic for what they were able to achieve with their budget. Seeing the updated morph sequence is a visual and nostalgic delight. As seen in the trailers, there’s a putty fight in the Juice Bar that absolutely blew my mind with how faithfully the original Juice Bar set has been recreated. Major kudos to the set designers and builders for making this set piece so faithful to the original.

The fight scenes are wonderfully scored thanks to the legend, Ron Wasserman. He managed to recreate the FEEL of the original series’ score while updating it. His work is absolutely worth watching certain scenes over and over to enjoy his score.

The climax of the special is an emotional rollercoaster that will have you cheering, laughing, and absolutely shedding a few tears. This special is everything I hoped for and surprised me at every turn. My only gripes are minor nitpicks that honestly have been talked about to death, so I won’t mention them here.

This special is fantastic and that’s why I’m giving Power Rangers: Once and Always an easy 9/10.

Morphenominal!

In newest Extra Episode, brought to you by our supporters on Patreon, we conclude our Power Rangers Dino Fury Season 2 episode reviews with episodes 19-22.

Eric had some Bad Vibes before editing this episode. It was The Invasion of “too much to do in life”. The Truth was that he needed James (@MSSPod) from Mostly Speakin’ Sentai and Marshland Media to help edit! In the end, The Nemesis was really unbleeped swearing….

We discuss some news including new Power Rangers Unlimited listings, Lightning Collection leaks and rants, Dekaranger and more! In our Ranger Nation Answers segment, we asked our listeners to tell us their favorite moment from season two and how much they are looking forward to Cosmic Fury.

NEWS – Hasbro Sustainability Packaging Update

Last July, Hasbro first announced their Plastic-Free Packaging initiatives for all of their toy lines. It seems that in the almost year since, fan response has led Hasbro to reverse this decision and bring back windowed packaging, but with sustainable plastics.

Tonight, we received an email from our Hasbro contact.

Hi –

We wanted to share an update on packaging for Hasbro’s 6-inch-scale figures. Based on your feedback, we will be re-introducing windows and blisters to our 6-inch fan figures beginning later this year, into 2024 for select products across our portfolio of brands, including, G.I. Joe Classified, Power Rangers Lightning Collection, Star Wars Black Series and Marvel Legends. This will eventually expand to all new 6-inch figure releases.

The new windows and blisters will be made from bio PET or recycled PET helping us achieve our priority of meeting our fans’ expectations for extraordinary packaging and superior design while still developing packaging that minimizes waste and the use of virgin plastic.

Thank you again for being one of our biggest fans and for your continued support of Hasbro.
