COMIC REVIEW – Power Rangers Issue 10

On Wednesday, August 18th, Power Rangers Issue 10 will be released from Boom Studios. Our exclusive first look of this issue was shown last month.

POWER RANGERS #10 – Yale, the Omega Rangers’ alien companion, embarks on a solo mission to protect a group of kids from the terrors of Safehaven. Guided by the voice of the Blue Emissary, Yale will travel closer to his destiny… but what does this mean for the Omega Rangers?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Much like Mighty Morphin issue 10, Power Rangers issue 10 is a milestone issue focusing on the origins of a key character while informing future arcs of the story. The focus is entirely on Yale this go around. Yale has been the companion of the Omega Rangers since the start of the new Power Rangers series.

In the first issue of Power Rangers, it was implied that the Omega Rangers let out Yale because he was no longer empowered. However, in this issue we get a flashback to the events of Necessary Evil where we see Kiya release Yale from confinement. We also see other key points in Yale’s life that let us know the troubles he has endured which also reference other past issues of the comic.

Since Yale does not speak, most of this is narrated by the spirit of the Blue Emissary and feels like a closing chapter for that character. The other side of the issue focuses on some of the children of Safehaven we’ve seen before. How the two stories combine and what happens to elevate Yale to his ‘destiny’ is really brilliant. The writing team of both Ryan Parrott and newcomer to the franchise, Rachel Wagner, makes for a strong outing that makes me wish we didn’t have to wait another month.

Artist Moisés Hidalgo takes over the duties of illustrating from Francesco Mortarino for this issue, continuing his Yale focused pages from issue 9. It’s a nice visual continuity that makes Yale’s journey feel like a bedtime story. The soft lines and shading really work the the colors of Raúl Angulo to achieve that look.

There’s not much more to say without spoiling the issue, so definitely pick this one up when it drops next week!”

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Issue 10

On Wednesday, August 11th, Mighty Morphin Issue 10 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown last month.

Discover Zordon’s ties to Bandora’s Palace on the Moon — the modern home of Rita Repulsa. When an assassin is sent to disrupt the Eltarians’ efforts to protect an ancient weapon, Zordon is injured in the process and his mentor, Zophram, must make a decision that will alter the future of the Power Rangers as we know it!

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Mighty Morphin Issue 10 is unlike the rest of the issues in this series, being a complete flashback to the ongoing story of Zordon’s past. Artist Dan Mora returns to illustrate this milestone issue, so you know it’s a big deal. All of the previous flashbacks have been leading up to this – the origin of one of the greatest villains in Power Rangers.

Writer Ryan Parrott has crafted a bold story, planned from the very beginning of the two new series. In fact, this issue was written over a year ago to accommodate artist Dan Mora’s schedule. With that amount of time, many clues have been built in to preceding issues and once you read this, it will all click into place. While the events of this issue may not be a surprise for some if you have been paying attention, the effect of this story is still impactful and leaves me wanting more.

The return of Dan Mora is welcome, especially for an issue like this. His style is so ingrained into the franchise, not only with Go Go Power Rangers, but recent designs for the ongoing arc. There was no better person to draw this issue. Of course, the colors by Raúl Angulo and Jose Enrique Fernández give the comic life with vibrant color changes between locations that set the mood for each scene.

There’s not much more to say about this issue without giving away all of the surprises, but it is worth reading. After this issue and the focus on Yale for next week’s Power Rangers Issue 10, it will be interesting to dive into the next chapter of this ongoing saga. Highly recommended!”

COMIC REVIEW – Power Rangers Issue 9

On Wednesday, July 21st, Power Rangers Issue 9 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown a couple weeks ago.

POWER RANGERS #9 – The Omega Rangers return to a Safehaven, but all is not well with the new arrivals. After a confrontation in the streets, can Zack help bring peace… or will a friend’s need for revenge against the Hartunians be too much for one Ranger?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“After a narrow escape from one of the Empyreals’ attack on Hartunia last issue the Omega Rangers return to Safe Haven, but how safe is it really?

I really enjoyed reading this issue. After months of galactic searching, the answers are starting to hit closer to the Omega Ranger’s home. It really feels like all of the pieces are falling into place. When dealing with a grand mythology of the Morphin Masters and Empyreals, Ryan Parrott does an incredible job balancing the side stories for all of the Rangers in this issue.

I think the standout is Zack’s story. Zack is put into a very tense situation that forces him to confront his decision from the previous issue head on. Zack’s continuous growth in this series is great to see, coming a long way from self describing himself as the jokester in Necessary Evil. That’s not to say the other Ranger’s don’t get a strong focus, because they do in spades. Jason is left with a decision he will need to address soon and Trini fully taps into her powerful potential.

Aside from artist Francesco Mortarino’s usual stunning art mixing action and character emotion, Moisés Hidalgo from the end run of the MMPR comic returns for a few guest pages. As seen in the preview below, this is a mini side story that sets up the focus for upcoming Issue 10’s Yale focused issue. I have always loved Hidalgo’s storybook look and this is no different. The end of the issue is particularly haunting and drawn beautifully with no dialogue needed.

This issue is highly recommended.”

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Issue 9

On Wednesday, July 14th, Mighty Morphin Issue 9 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown a couple weeks ago.

Will the Power Rangers make the right choice and save Angel Grove? The battle of Angel Grove continues as the team grapples with a seemingly no-win scenario. Will they be able to defeat Lord Zedd and his surprising new ally, or will their home fall into chaos for good?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Mighty Morphin Issue 9 packs a lot of story into one issue, answering some questions I’ve had as a reader from early on in the beginning of the Unlimited Power arc. While not a super action-packed issue, this story delves into the consequences Billy has to face for lying to his team, the fallout of life after the dome surrounding Angel Grove and the imprisonment of Zelya/Candice at the hands of Lord Zedd.

All of this story is exactly what I had been wanting since my review of the last issue, and in rereading the past issues the 3-week time skip is no longer a problem for me.

As seen below, the preview tells another part of Zordon’s past as Zartus confers with a Bandorian to surround the Zeo Crystal with an incantation of the Fire of Truth. This explains more of the Zeo Crystal’s origins as seen in the episode ‘Master Vile and the Metallic Armor’. I love that we have an explanation of Bandora’s Palace from the sentai footage and what we already seen of the Zeo Crystal’s story in the Caves of Deception. More context to the lore of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will be explored in next month’s Mighty Morphin Issue 10 featuring the return of Dan Mora for that issue.

Writer Ryan Parrott delivers many excellent character moments and humor in this issue, touching on all of the main players and side characters. Artist Marco Renna keeps the dialogue heavy issue balanced with great set pieces, interesting close ups and angles, and detailed character art. Walter Baimonte’s (and team’s) colors are bright, with some color gradient backgrounds and fills sprinkled in to emphasize emotion of the character speaking.

Mighty Morphin Issue 9 sets the stage for next month’s lore focused issue with answers people have been waiting for. A must read if you have been keeping up to date!”

COMIC REVIEW – Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness #1

On Wednesday, June 30th, POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: EDGE OF DARKNESS #1 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown last week.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: EDGE OF DARKNESS #1 – ENTER THE PHANTOM RANGER! Answering Zordon’s call, the Phantom Ranger investigates the aftermath of an Empyreal attack. Only to discover their connection to an ancient evil he encountered long ago… which may have finally returned to threaten the entire universe.

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Last week Power Rangers Issue 8 released and showed the destruction of the planet Hartunia at the hands of the Empyreals. The second in a mini one-shot series, Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of  Darkness, explores a past adventure of the mysterious Phantom Ranger from 10,000 years ago in a flashback after visiting Hartunia at the behest of Zordon. The implications going forward in the comics universe are monumental!

With the Phantom Ranger being such a popular character among fans and the hype surrounding the issue, Edge of Darkness has a lot riding on it. Fortunately, writer Frank Gogol has crafted a beautiful story to fill in some of the gaps of the Phantom Ranger’s origins with an adventure that continues a plot thread from deep in the Power Rangers comic universe. The story serves as a continuation from Go Go Power Rangers Issues 18-19 where Lady Fienna is trying to escape with a young Rita from the forces of Master Vile. In fact, the first page of the flashback’s dialogue is taken from the last time we see them. Not only do we get a resolution to that plotline, but it reveals some great details and lore in the Power Rangers universe.

On the artwork side, Simone Ragazzoni returns from ‘Drakkon New Dawn’ and the previous ‘Heir to Darkness’. The visual continuity between these books helps to tie the stories together since both deal with the looming threat of Dark Specter. The detail that Simone brings to the issue is amazing. From the Phantom Ranger and his ship, to gorgeous space scenes and action, every panel is packed with care. Colorist Igor Monti also returns and brings a rich palette of colors that fit with the sci-fi aesthetic of the issue.

Overall, Power Rangers Unlimited: Edge of Darkness not only serves as a conclusion to a past storyline and expands the Power Rangers universe, but it continues the threat of Dark Specter. Leaving it for what we know happens in Power Rangers In Space or room for future exploration with that character. More importantly, we get more depth into the character of the Phantom Ranger and opening him up for further adventures. Highly recommended!”

Stay tuned tomorrow for our interview with writer Frank Gogol!

COMIC REVIEW – Power Rangers Issue 8

On Wednesday, June 23rd, Power Rangers Issue 8 will be released from Boom Studios. Our exclusive first look of this issue was shown last week.

POWER RANGERS #8 – This is it. There is nowhere left to run and no more time to prepare as the Omega Rangers must stand off against one of the Empyreal… with the fate of an entire planet at stake. And when the Omega Rangers discover the true nature of the threat to Earth, will they be able to warn their former teammates in time?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“This is the issue I’ve been waiting for, the Omega Rangers finally confront one of the Empyreals.

As seen in past issues, the Hartunian Empire controls and enslaves planets for thousands of years all the way back as during young Zordon’s first adventures. It’s ironic that their fate lies in the hands of the Omega Rangers, who want to protect all life. Drakkon seems to be content to watch from the sidelines as entertainment, calling them scavengers.  But will the cost to save them be too high?

Power Rangers Issue 8 is very bittersweet and makes you wonder how futile the Omega Ranger’s quest might be. All of that is felt through Zack’s perspective in this installment. There’s only so much humor Zack can use to diffuse a situation or make himself feel better. After this issue, it will be hard to find humor in this instance.

Writer Ryan Parrott has done a good job building the mystery up until this point, but now more than ever readers definitely need more answers! The next couple months are going to be crucial for both series to start to deliver on building storylines.

As always, artist Francesco Mortarino exceeds himself with beautiful alien landscapes, dynamic perspectives and epic zord fights. For an emotional ride such as this issue, the characters convey every sense of loss and urgency in the situation. Colorist Raúl Angulo uses color contrast to great affect, the oranges and blues of the Empyreal stand out against the battles on Hartunia.

You will want to stay to the end of this issue, because it not only sets the next stage of the story in motion, but leads directly into June 30th’s ‘Edge of Darkness’ written by Frank Gogol. Highly recommended.”

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Issue 8

On Wednesday, June 9th, Mighty Morphin Issue 8 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown last week.

Will the Power Rangers be able to save Angel Grove from Lord Zedd and his Putty Primes? With Tommy’s life on the line, the rest of the team will have to rely on new allies with their own agenda. Meanwhile, past and present collide as another player finally reveals themselves and makes their move…

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“As we inch closer to Mighty Morphin Issue 10 and the return of Dan Mora with a Zordon focused story, more lore regarding the Zeo Crystal is shown in the first few pages of Mighty Morphin issue 8. At least… some Eltarian myths surrounding the crystal. Is Zeon in the story one of the original Morphin Masters? If so, it’s a great way to tie in the comics and what we’ve seen so far from Power Rangers Dino Fury

Aside from that, the preview continues in the present with Tommy squaring off against the Megazord sized Putty Primes. With some help from Aisha, the issue has an explosive start. The situation flips pretty drastically back and forth for the rest of the issue. And while we won’t spoil anything, I really hope that we get some non-Ranger character beats from the fallout of this issue. In the past few issues, there have been a couple time skips that I think take away from the characters truly processing some of the events going on. I hope we get that in the next issue, before the Zordon standalone in Issue 10.

Writer Ryan Parrott really delivered by making Aisha a big part of this issue early on and has been doing a great job in fleshing out the Yellow Rangers for both series. Artist Marco Renna excels with the Zord battles and panel layouts. There’s also some unique panels with the fight scenes in this issue, particularly with Rocky fighting, that I found visually appealing.

Overall, Issue 8 ups the stakes in another power move from Zedd and continues to build for the event issue coming up. Definitely looking forward to see what happens next!”
