COMIC PREVIEW – Go Go Power Rangers 29

On February 12th, Boom Studios releases Go Go Power Rangers Issue 29.

Tommy steps into his new role as leader of the Power Rangers, but not everyone is convinced he’ll be able to lead like Jason did. Meanwhile, Zack, Trini, and Jason are given their first mission as OMEGA RANGERS, and must trust that their friends will be able to handle all of Lord Zedd‘s threats without them.

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Necessary Evil continues as this comic nears its conclusion and catch up to MMPR issue 40. While we know where the story needs to go, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some surprises in this issue. Without giving too much away, Lord Zedd’s plan is unexpected and will give readers more to think about the role of certain elements only introduced in the comics.

I was also pleasantly surprised that this issue revisited a personal plotline with one of the Rangers. It was stories like this that make Go Go a standout of the Power Rangers comic series, and one that I hope continues in the main comic after Necessary Evil. We don’t always need a big event to tell compelling stories.

After Necessary Evil ends, I look forward to reading the event in chronological order. Go Go has done a great job of filling in the missing pieces of the event while simultaneously introducing some surprises that keep us coming back. If there ever is a successor to this series, I can only hope it can come close to what Go Go Power Rangers has achieved. “

COMIC PREVIEW – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Issue 3

On Wednesday, February 5th,  Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Issue 3 will be released from Boom Studios. Below you will find a preview of the issue as well as the main cover and variants.

Rita Repulsa faces off against Shredder for control of the weapon that will change the Power Rangers forever! No matter who wins, the world will never be the same! As the two villains battle, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers must find a way to storm the Foot Clan base to save Tommy, as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles step up to help their new allies in an unexpected way.

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Continuing the cliffhanger from Issue 2, Shredder in his new Green Ranger armor faces off against Rita Repulsa. Rita wants the Dragon Coin returned to her, accusing Shredder of corrupting its power. And that’s only the first couple pages of this issue.

Issue three is a solid mid point for this 5-issue miniseries. The teams are formed for both good and evil in a natural way, with motivations that make sense. The issue also reveals more depth to the early childhood of Tommy Oliver, something the show rarely touched on.

“More depth” has been the recurring highlight of BOOM! Studios entire run of Power Rangers comics, exploring the lives of the teenagers with attitude outside of what viewers have seen in the show. While some may argue there is too much focus on Tommy, I think that is a disservice to all the writing that has been devoted to other characters in the comics.

For this crossover, we also discover more about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, already adding to the more than 30 years fans have grown up with them.

I won’t give away the ending, but it cements how much fun this miniseries is, playing with concepts we could only dream of as children. If you’re not reading this issue, be sure to pick it up along with the reprints for Issues 1 and 2 that release on the same day!”

COMIC PREVIEW – Go Go Power Rangers 28

On January 29th, Boom Studios releases Go Go Power Rangers Issue 28, the second of two GGPR issues coming out this month and the fourth week of six straight weeks of Power Rangers comics.

Before RITA REPULSA was the Power Ranger’s enemy she was imprisoned in a dumpster on the moon, serving time for her widespread reign of terror. Within the confines of her cell, Rita is forced to confront her sins, by experiencing the lives of those she has affected…

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

A couple weeks ago I speculated that with the end of Necessary Evil, Go Go Power Rangers might end or take a new direction. This week’s news that the book is ending, gives this issue more significance.

In Go Go Power Rangers 28, we take a break from the main story to focus on Rita Repulsa and her minions. In issue 24 the comic explored Bulk and Skull’s characters in a similar fashion. In my opinion, this is what Go Go Power Ranger’s has done best. We get to explore the motivations of characters by taking a look into their past.

With this issue, we get a glimpse of Rita’s imprisonment inside the Space Dumpster for over 10,000 years. I won’t give anything away, but the story is based on a trope used many times in science fiction stories. That’s not to say this issue is lessened by that trope, because the implications of what Rita goes through in this issue and what she does when she is released are staggering. You will realize how deep her evil runs and how irredeemable she is.

With four issues left, why focus on Rita Repulsa now? She has not been a part of Necessary Evil. I think this sets up a reintroduction of her character after almost a year of absence. Could the solicitations referral of [SPOILER] be… the return of Rita?”

COMIC PREVIEW – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 47

On Wednesday, January 22nd, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 47 will be released from Boom Studios.  A couple weeks ago we posted a first look of this issue, now take a full look at the finished preview of the issue as well as the main cover and variants.

NECESSARY EVIL CONTINUES! After a shocking betrayal, the Omega Rangers are forced to return to earth—and to reveal their identities to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. But can either team of Power Rangers survive the truth?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“The war has begun and the march to the endgame of this chapter of Power Rangers is in full swing. With the revelation of the identity of the Omega Rangers, tensions are at their boiling point on both sides. And it’s justified, what would you do if a group of your friends have lied to you about what they were up to for months? If you felt like a temporary replacement? If a secret you struggled to keep is now affecting your friendships? This dramatic tension has been building from the start of Necessary Evil and now the real test of the Rangers’ friendship begins.

Writer Ryan Parrott has done a fantastic job of balancing this tension with the action of this issue. There are plenty of great character moments between characters that haven’t been together in awhile. Trini particularly stands out in this issue, trying to keep the peace between her friends and the Stone Canyon trio.

As for the artwork, artist Daniele di Nicuolo continues to capture the emotions of all of the characters in spectacular fashion. One of the greatest panels is in the preview below with the morphing sequence. It always amazes me how different artists tackle morphing in different layouts, especially with the colors on opposite sides of the panel from colorist Walter Baiamonte.

We are nearing the end of this almost year long arc and it will be very interesting to see where things stand at the end.”
