BOOM! Studios and Amy Jo Johnson Give Fans a Prelude Story in the Upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Special

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Kimberly Hart offers fans a lead-in story to her upcoming series

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 25, 2023)Due to the overwhelming positive reaction to the announcement of the upcoming Amy Jo Johnson penned comic series, BOOM! Studios and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ original Pink Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson, are offering fans a glimpse into her world of the Rangers with an 8-page prelude story, now to be included in the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Special.

The new series was announced as part of the currently active BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign, POWER RANGERS: A 30th Anniversary Comic Book Celebration as it rocketed past the $250,000 Stretch Goal within less than 24 hours of the campaign launch. This new 8-page prelude story comes as the campaign’s $625,000 Stretch Goal.

Details on the hotly anticipated series are being kept under wraps for the time being, but more information will be made available later this year.

Amy Jo Johnson began her acting career as Kimberly Hart, the original Pink Power Ranger. For the next twenty years, she starred in a number of film and television productions, such as Susie Q, Perfect Body, Felicity, and Flashpoint. For the last ten years, she has turned her attention to behind the camera, writing and directing four short films, two feature films, and made her foray into TV directing on the CW’s Superman and Lois. Amy Jo is incredibly excited to reflect back on her time as a Ranger, and this comic book series will be a love letter to her fans and the franchise that gave her her start.

“I want to thank the faithful Power Ranger community for the love and excitement from the announcement of my up-and-coming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic book series! To kick it off, BOOM! has invited us to write a short story for this summer’s upcoming anthology special, which will introduce our re-imagined world of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! OG style!” said actor, director, and forever our Pink Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson.

Ranger Command Power Hour Episode 215

It’s time to Ranger Up with @trekkieb47, @secretrangerfan & @ZachLaVoy as they talk all things Power Rangers on the Four Eyed Radio Network with RANGER COMMAND POWER HOUR!

Eric, A.P. and Zach are here with a SPOILER-FREE review of the Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Special – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always.

A huge thanks to Hasbro, eOne and Netflix for providing us with a Press Screener.

Here is Zach’s review:

I love how this special jumps right into the action and we’re quickly introduced to the new character Minh, played by Charlie Kersh. She fits right in with the cast and you feel the emotion behind every line she says.

The special moves at Lightning pace to tell a comprehensive story that lays out exactly what happened to the team, and the hurdles they must overcome in order to come out on top. Lots of great fight scenes, tons of heart, and a love for the original MMPR team tempered with fun easter eggs for the long time franchise fans. And while not every single plot hole is explained away, only the most hardcore lore hounds will notice. When in doubt, just remember the MST3K mantra “It’s just a show, I should really just relax.”

The updated effects look fantastic for what they were able to achieve with their budget. Seeing the updated morph sequence is a visual and nostalgic delight. As seen in the trailers, there’s a putty fight in the Juice Bar that absolutely blew my mind with how faithfully the original Juice Bar set has been recreated. Major kudos to the set designers and builders for making this set piece so faithful to the original.

The fight scenes are wonderfully scored thanks to the legend, Ron Wasserman. He managed to recreate the FEEL of the original series’ score while updating it. His work is absolutely worth watching certain scenes over and over to enjoy his score.

The climax of the special is an emotional rollercoaster that will have you cheering, laughing, and absolutely shedding a few tears. This special is everything I hoped for and surprised me at every turn. My only gripes are minor nitpicks that honestly have been talked about to death, so I won’t mention them here.

This special is fantastic and that’s why I’m giving Power Rangers: Once and Always an easy 9/10.

Morphenominal!

NEWS – BOOM! Studios’ POWER RANGERS: 30th Anniversary Comic Celebration Campaign Nears Half Million, Amy Jo Johnson Writes New POWER RANGERS Story

As BOOM! Studios’ POWER RANGERS: A 30th Anniversary Comic Book Celebration Campaign Nears a Half Million, Amy Jo Johnson Writes a New POWER RANGERS Story

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ Kimberly Hart joins the publisher in celebrating 30 years of Power Rangers storytelling

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 31, 2023) – BOOM! Studios’ newest BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign, POWER RANGERS: A 30th Anniversary Comic Book Celebration, has sped past the $250,000 Stretch Goal mark in less than 24 hours unlocking a new series announcement. BOOM! Studios is thrilled to announce that original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers cast member Amy Jo Johnson, along with co-writer Matt Hotson are writing a brand new Power Rangers series!

“It’s been decades since I first put on the Pink Ranger suit, which started my career in the entertainment industry. I had no idea the impact this character would have on so many children. I was your friend, and you’ve supported my career through all its twists and turns, and now thirty years later, I’m honoured to have the opportunity to say thank you by writing this new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic book series with Boom! Studios as a love letter to all of you!” said actor, director, and forever our Pink Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson.

When Matt Hotson saw his first comic book (G.I. Joe Special Missions #22) at the impressionable young age of four, he was blown away that someone had made a Saturday morning kids show he could take with him wherever he went. Since then, he’s read way too many comics, and worked as an assistant director on TV shows like DC’s Titans (and a bunch of other ones that didn’t have any superheroes in them for some reason). Now he co-writes Power Rangers comic books with Amy Jo Johnson, so he can take a Saturday morning kids show with him wherever he goes.

BOOM! Studios’ POWER RANGERS 30 campaign offers fans the opportunity to complete their collections with three brand new, exclusive Deluxe Hardcovers spanning the first three decades of Power Rangers storytelling in comics–Power Rangers Archives Book One, Power Rangers Archives Book Two, and Power Rangers Lost Chronicles Book One. All three Deluxe Hardcovers are available individually or as a set, with or without slipcases, and in unsigned and signed limited edition sets packaged in an exclusive collectible box.

In addition to all of that, BOOM! Studios is beyond thrilled to offer a variety of new commemorative comic books and merchandise for POWER RANGERS 30, including an exclusive POWER RANGERS 30 ANGEL GROVE LETTERMAN JACKET and much, much more!

“There was never a universe in which BOOM! celebrated the monumental 30th anniversary of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers without Amy Jo Johnson. She has proven herself again and again as a strong storyteller with a compelling voice, and getting to bring her and Matt in to tell a new Power Rangers story is a full circle moment for all of us here at BOOM! Studios.” said Dafna Pleban, Power Rangers series editor.

COMIC PREVIEW – Power Rangers Ranger Slayer #1

On Wednesday, July 22nd, POWER RANGERS RANGER SLAYER #1 will be released from Boom Studios.

The Ranger Slayer – AKA Kimberly Hart, the Pink Mighty Morphin Power Ranger from the alternate universe once ruled by Lord Dakkon – returns home and nothing is like she expected. In a world that only knows her as a villain, can Kimberly show her universe that she’s become a hero…and is that even the right thing to do? Confronted by a terrifying new version of an old enemy, and with her home in chaos, Kimberly will make a stunning choice that no Power Rangers fan can miss. This issue is also a perfect jumping on point for new readers – and sets the stage for the next Power Rangers epic!

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Ranger Slayer #1 is a unique one shot for Power Rangers. It continues the story of Kim, the Ranger Slayer, from her last appearance heading home through the Master Arch as seen at the end of MMPR Issue 50. Ranger Slayer #1 is not only continuing that journey for the character, but sets up the upcoming 3-issue miniseries “Drakkon New Dawn”.

For such a pivotal comic, not only does it have to bridge that gap, but also serve as a self contained story. Does it succeed? In my opinion… yes and no.

The world of the Coinless is six months out from Drakkon’s disappearance in Shattered Grid. The power vacuum has been filled by an old enemy of the Power Rangers (Scorpina – she’s on the cover…), consistent with their last appearance in the comics and even through HyperRPG’s Power Rangers Hyperforce. As always, I won’t spoil the issue in this review, but I enjoyed the interactions with the Coinless and Kim becoming a reluctant leader. That’s consistent with how she felt during Beyond the Grid and it’s nice to see here.

There are also plenty of callbacks to events in Shattered Grid, but it may get confusing for casual readers considering how that aarc ended. Even as a diehard reader of the comics, I had to go back and reread certain events to make sure I had the timeline straight. I was also slightly disappointed of the final resolution in the one shot. There’s a trend I am starting to see throughout the past year of Power Rangers comics that is becoming slightly tired, but I am willing to see where the new status quo takes readers for Drakkon New Dawn.

Dan Mora returns to Power Rangers for this one-shot, and the art is the highlight of this issue. Mora takes a standard 9-grid comic layout approach to Ranger Slayer #1 and it just works. The art reminds me of Hendry Prasetya’s early run during MMPR, which is fitting since that’s where we saw the Coinless world for the first time. The sketchy nature of the inks make the World of the Coinless feel dirty and war-torn, appropriate for the tone of the issue.

Overall, this is still a crucial issue for the upcoming mini-series. I look forward to more of Ranger Slayer’s journey in the coming months.”
