But that all changed when one key member became seduced by the death-defying powers of the Rangers’ greatest foe. How does this Ranger connect to what’s locked in the mysterious Omega Vault in Safehaven so many millennia later, as everything converges in the milestone comic book event CHARGE TO 100?

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE DEATH RANGER #1 features main cover art by Keyla Valerio (Mighty Morphin) and variant cover art by highly acclaimed illustrators Goñi Montes (Mighty Morphin), Derrick Chew (Harley Quinn), and more.

Celebrating 100 issues of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics, this milestone event will take place April to September 2022, culminating in a special 100th issue for Mighty Morphin Issue 23. “It’s absolutely incredible to think that we’ll reach 100 issues of our phenomenal Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics this September. COMIC REVIEW – Power Rangers Issue 17

This past Wednesday, March 16th, Power Rangers Issue 17 was released from Boom Studios. We had a first look of the issue last week.

With the threat of the Empyreals gone and Earth saved, the Omega Rangers must forge a new path for themselves! But with the Blue Emissary gone and Xi still out of commission, can the Rangers survive the dangers of the universe that they’re trying to protect?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue and shares his review:

“The aftermath of the Eltarian War continues with the second mainline comic this month with Power Rangers Issue 17. For this issue, the focus is on each of the Omega Rangers – Jason is on the hunt for Drakkon, Trini is focusing on repairing Xi and Zack helps catch a thief on Safehaven.

Jason is still on the search for galactic threats and signs of the Spectrum II and Drakkon. Eventually he is interrupted by Yale chasing a jellyfly, one of the many native species of Safehaven, and comes to a realization. Trini gets some help from Billy via intergalactic communication as she attempts to repair Xi. It’s nice to have some crossover with the acknowledgement that the Mighty Morphin team is looking for a new Command Center, seen last issue. Xi is successfully repaired, but he has a change in personality. He is restricting access to his previous memories, cutting off the trauma of being destroyed and the events of Unlimited Power. Zack helps Arkon with a mystery of stolen items across Safehaven, the latest being a Morphin Master spear. This is a great connection to the currently running Power Rangers Unlimited as the staff has a unique Dairanger/Squadron design. The thief is a young Hartunian named Kevor Vrin whose parents were King’s guards and killed when the Empyreals destroyed their planet. Arkon spares his life after a fight, the tension still lingering between their two species.

All of these individual stories come to a head with the Omega Rangers coming to the same conclusion – they need to do more and focus on the larger picture. They send out a galaxy wide communication with several shots on alien species and individuals (Andros!). And we are teased with the message reaching the Followers of Vox. Yup! Vox, as in Garrison Vox from Necessary Evil. How’s that for full circle?

Writer Ryan Parrott continues the Omega Ranger saga without a universe-ending storyline, beginning a new chapter for the Omega Rangers that feels more personal. I am glad that Xi is back, but also not himself. As an advanced robot, his continuing storyline with his memories and choosing to access them or not harkens back to classic science fiction. Are we the same without our memories? It’s another plot that I can’t wait to see the implications of going forward. Artist Marco Renna switches to Power Rangers after his stint on Mighty Morphin and it’s wonderful to see his art continue to be paired with Ryan’s writing. I’ve said so many great things about Marco in past reviews that I would just be repeating myself.

Power Rangers Issue 17 is the next evolution for the Omega Rangers. They have a lot of work to do to live up to the message they sent galaxy-wide. With no ship and the Omega Zords still damaged, it’s only a matter of time before trouble comes knocking on Safehaven’s door. We can only hope they are prepared…”

COMIC REVIEW – Power Rangers Issue 16

This past Wednesday, February 16th, Power Rangers Issue 16 was released from Boom Studios. We had an exclusive first look of the issue last week.

The Omega Rangers travel back to Safehaven to keep an eye on the rest of the galaxy, while Eternity Point falls under the supervision of a new assistant. As the Blue Emissary departs and the remains of three Emissaries are laid to rest, the universe seems relatively safe for now, but how long can that peace last before it’s shattered?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“After 32 issues (counting both Unlimited Power and the Eltarian War) the saga of Zordon and his past concludes with a satisfying finale. Serving as an epilogue of sorts, Power Rangers Issue 16 wraps up most of the plotlines while still leaving open so many possibilities for the future. Earlier this month, Mighty Morphin Issue 16 was an action packed spectacle and this issue slowed things down as the future of both teams is in question.

The opening is a fascinating conversation between Lord Zedd and Zordon about the philosophy of  ‘The Power’. Lord Zedd spares Zordon, even calling him a friend, but this is probably the closest understanding they will ever have. The rest of the issue deals with the fallout of the Eltarian War with Sentry Force Four surrendering to Zeyla. Trini has a final conversation with Drakkon as he depart with the Spectrum II for parts unknown. Their dynamic has been something that I really enjoyed throughout this story, Trini in particular has shown amazing growth in her convictions and role as a leader.

Grace and Zordon also patch things up and Zordon gets to have a moment to himself outside on top of the White Tiger Dragonzord. Zordon’s journey in this story has been a delight to read, particularly seeing so much of his past when he was younger. Zordon is not infallible and it’s great to see him triumph and overcome his personal demons from the past. Fate has tied him to Earth, and he endorses Zeyla as the Supreme Guardian. As he says, Eltar needs a fresh start and I hope we see more of modern Eltar in future issues of Power Rangers.

We also get a great scene with the Blue Emissary saying goodbye to the Omega Rangers. I liked the closure here because the Emissary tells the Rangers what they still don’t realize about themselves – they have the power and courage to protect the universe, no mentor required. The Minions reunite with Lord Zedd in the broken remains of the Moon Palace, having made their choice to not live free in Safe Haven. Here, it’s revealed that there is another plan that Zedd has cooked up, showing he is always trying to be two steps ahead of Zordon. Finally, we get a very touching moment between Skull and Zeyla. This scene was very sweet and finally gives Skull the closure he needs, on a trajectory to his growth in the show during Zeo.

Overall, Ryan Parrott has taken the Herculean task of wrapping up this arc with emotional closure and leaving the door open for Mathew Groom, who takes over Mighty Morphin next month. Ryan isn’t going anywhere though, he is still writing Power Rangers with more adventures planned for the Omega Rangers. I will miss the art by Francesco Mortarino. His art has been so tied to the franchise for the past few years. Wherever he ends up next, I will be keeping an eye on his future projects.

The future is wide open for both series and I can’t wait to see what’s next for both teams. Don’t miss our next episode of the podcast as I interview Ryan Parrott and do a deep dive on the Eltarian War.”
