COMIC REVIEW – Power Rangers Issue 6

On Wednesday, April 21st, Power Rangers Issue 6 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown yesterday.

POWER RANGERS #6 – The New Power Rangers have formed an uneasy alliance with Lord Drakkon…but now must trust Astronema and Ecliptor in order to survive. But do the would-be Princess of Evil and her mentor have something else planned for their new allies?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Who loves a good ol’ fashioned train heist? In keeping with the Wild West theme of the Planet Onyx, that’s exactly what you get in the newest issue of Power Rangers!

From the preview pages, Artist Simone Ragazzoni and colorist Igot Monti return from Power Rangers Unlimited: Heir to Darkness to sum up the backstory of Astronema from that issue. This is framed as the story Ecliptor is describing to Trini from those events as well as connecting to Power Rangers In Space.

This was a fantastic set up for readers who may have missed that issue, but we are shown ‘the truth’ in the artwork. Astronema’s parents weren’t killed by Power Rangers, but the forces of Dark Specter. And the kids orphaned by these attacks are processed into his ever expanding army. Seriously… everyone needs to read ‘Heir to Darkness’.

While we won’t spoil the rest of the issue in this preview, the overall theme is the grey area between pure good and evil. While the Omega Rangers’ quest is noble… saving the universe… how far are they willing to go to do that? Teaming up with the forces of Drakkon and Dark Specter?

The standout character once again is Trini. Writer Ryan Parrott has really made her a force of leadership and the moral compass of the team ever since his Go Go Power Rangers days. She is easily one of my favorite characters in the whole run of the comics.

The Omega Rangers are getting closer to their goal, but how much are they willing to sacrifice for the greater good?”

NEWS – Power Rangers Battle for the Grid Super Edition and Street Fighter Pack Announced

Originally announced yesterday by IGN, nWay announced that PRBFTG is having a morphinominal cross-over with none other than Capcom’s Street Fighter franchise in the upcoming Street Fighter Pack and the brand new Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid – Super Edition, created with their partners at Hasbro and Lionsgate. You’re going to see Ryu and Chun-Li morphing into Power Rangers to duke it out against the roster of fan-favorite Power Rangers and villains.

Ryu enters the Morphin Grid with the new Street Fighter Pack.

Lord Zedd has weakened the Morphin Grid and is starting to break down the walls between realities. Ryu finds himself transported to the world of the Rangers where he acquires a Power Coin and takes on the mantle of the Crimson Hawk Ranger. Ryu brings to the battle his trademark stoic, reserved poise and a lifetime of Shotokan training. His fluid, almost water-like fighting style is deadly at both range and up close, with his moves executed using classic, genre-defining input commands. Keep opponents on their toes from a distance with classic Hadouken, or punish aggressive play up close with his Tastumaki Senpukyaku or iconic Shoryuken.

The Street Fighter Pack featuring Ryu and Chun-Li will be available on May 25 for $12.50 across PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Steam, and Stadia. Players can also buy each character individually for $5.99.

The Street Fighter Pack will contain:

  • Ryu, Crimson Hawk Ranger
  • Chun-Li, Blue Phoenix Ranger
  • Exclusive skins to be revealed at a later date!

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid – Super Edition, is a collection of all the game’s DLCs released thus far, plus the newly announced Street Fighter Pack, along with some exclusive items available only in this very special edition. The Super Edition will launch digitally on May 25 with a physical boxed version to follow in July. The Super Edition will be sold for $49.99 and available on PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Steam and Stadia. Upgrade Kits to the Super Edition will also be available to those who already own Battle for the Grid.

The Super Edition will contain:

  • The base Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid game
  • Season One Pass
  • Season Two Pass
  • Season Three Pass
  • Street Fighter Pack
  • 4 Bonus Character Skins
    • Previously available skins in the Collector’s Edition (Pink Ranger, Lord Drakkon Evo II)
    • Green Ranger V2 Skin
    • A Super Edition Exclusive Ryu, Crimson Hawk Ranger Skin (“Helmetless Crimson Hawk Ranger”)

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Issue 6

On Wednesday, April 14th, Mighty Morphin Issue 6 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown last week.

Still reeling from the revelation of the New Green Ranger’s true identity, the New Mighty Morphin team must join with former Ranger Grace Sterling to save Angel Grove from a new threat tied to Zordon’s surprising past. But nothing could prepare the Rangers for the two people who stand in their way…

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Last time on Mighty Morphin, we got a glimpse of Matthew Cook becoming the new Green Ranger after his reveal at the end of Issue 4. In Issue 6 we see what’s going on outside of the dome, but not before another flashback to Zordon’s time over 10,000 years ago.

By now I think everyone knows how much I dig these glimpses into the past. We didn’t get one in the last issue since it focused on Matt, but I’m glad to see it return. Now that Zordon is Chief Guardian, there’s a moment between him and Zartus that needed to be shared. Supreme Guardian Zophram chose Zordon over Zartus, and Zartus was right to be upset. While he admits that Zordon might be a greater warrior than him, I wonder if Zartus will harbor some jealousy going forward.

In the final bit of the preview, we learn that the Power Rangers are now working with the Marines to help deal with the energy barrier. Later in the issue we find out there has been a 23-day time-skip. This is the only spoiler I’ll give in my review, but I’m glad some time has passed in the story. I appreciate we didn’t get four issues of them trying to figure things out with the energy field or the story being overly extended. It not only makes the situation of Lord Zedd’s energy field a bigger threat, but has some lasting consequences later in the issue.

The rest of the issue has more great character moments, especially finding out more about Rocky’s family. Rocky has been increasingly one of my favorite characters in the last few issues and I’m glad the Stone Canyon trio are getting fleshed out. They got the short end of the stick during Necessary Evil, but they are coming into their own in this current run of the comics.

We get another twist at the end of the issue and I’m honestly not sure where the story will go from here. Writer Ryan Parrott has a knack for making these cliffhangers being interesting and leaving readers wanting more. I have so many questions, and I think everyone else will too. Why do we have to wait another month??”

COMIC REVIEW – Power Rangers Unlimited: Heir to Darkness #1

On Wednesday, March 31st, POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: HEIR TO DARKNESS #1 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown earlier this week.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: HEIR TO DARKNESS #1 – Astronema is one of the most popular Power Rangers villains ever and her true origin is revealed for the first time in a one-shot directly connected to the events of Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers! Before she became a Power Ranger, a young girl named Karone was kidnapped by bounty hunters and brainwashed into the assassin known as Astronema by two of the greatest threats in the galaxy – Dark Specter and Ecliptor. But what is Dark Spector’s true plan…and what does it mean for the new Mighty Morphin & Power Rangers teams? Acclaimed author L.L. McKinney (A Blade So Black) and artist Simone Ragazzoni (Power Rangers: Drakkon New Dawn) present a powerful new story that no Power Rangers fan can miss.

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Last week Power Rangers Issue 5 released and gave us a first look at a younger Astronema, before the events of Power Rangers In Space. The first in a new one-shot series, Power Rangers Unlimited: Heir to Darkness, explores the rise of Karone as Astronema and leads directly into Power Rangers Issue 5 and next month’s Issue 6.

The comic has a lot to live up to, but thankfully writer L.L. McKinney delivers. A longtime fan of Power Rangers and particularly of In Space, she fills the issue with clever references and ties into events we have seen in the show. Rivalries are explored as well as the motivations of Dark Specter, Darkonda and Ecliptor. Astronema is the center of it all and she has a journey throughout this issue to earn the title of ‘Princess of Evil’. Like me, you might be surprised at a reveal towards the end of the issue and leave you wanting to read it again.

In terms of the artwork, Simone Ragazzoni returns from ‘Drakkon New Dawn’. While the painterly style is back, the detail of the characters and action is in top form. I really enjoyed the style of Ecliptor and Darkonda which pushed their look from the series even more. Darkonda’s expressions in the issue are twisted. For the action, there are some beautiful spreads that take advantage of sharp angles and excellent panel layouts. Colorist Igor Monti makes the issue bold and colorful, a stark contrast to an issue focusing on villains. A lot of greens, oranges and purples set the palette for the issue.

Overall, Power Rangers Unlimited: Heir to Darkness is a pivotal and must read issue for longtime fans of Astronema. Even though it ties into the current arc in the comic series, this is a great standalone for those who haven’t kept up with all of the releases. Highly recommended!”

Stay tuned next week for a more in-depth review on the podcast as well as our interview with writer L.L. McKinney!

NEWS – Special Olympics Athlete Sarah Dalton Guest Stars In “Power Rangers Dino Fury” Episode 5 Premiering March 27 on Nickelodeon

SPECIAL OLYMPICS EQUESTRIAN ATHLETE SARAH DALTON GUEST STARS IN “POWER RANGERS DINO FURY” EPISODE 5 ‘WINNING ATTITUDE’, PREMIERING SATURDAY, MARCH 27 AT 8:00 A.M. (ET/PT) ON NICKELODEON

The 28th season of Power Rangers made a morphinominal return with “Power Rangers Dino Fury,” and the series is set to premiere its fifth episode featuring guest star Sarah Dalton, a Special Olympics New Zealand Equestrian athlete, who plays Lily on the show. The episode ‘Winning Attitude’ airs on Saturday, March 27 at 8:00 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

In the episode, Dino Fury Green Ranger Izzy (Tessa Rao) is determined to win a big race with the help of her Special Olympics athlete cousin, Lily (Sarah Dalton). After Lily misses a training session and Izzy rejects more help, her sportsmanship is put to the test. The episode teaches viewers that winning isn’t everything and sometimes helping people is more important.

“When casting Lily, we wanted to make sure this person A) was a Special Olympics athlete and B) had a positive spirit and attitude complementing the qualities of our main cast. Sarah certainly met those requirements, and she has been fantastic to work with,” said Executive Producer Simon Bennett. “Featuring diverse characters has always been a vital part of the Power Rangers story. We’re thrilled to have Sarah join the Power Rangers family.”

“Working on Power Rangers Dino Fury was the opportunity of a lifetime, and I’m so grateful. Right from day one, the production team, the crew and the cast were so welcoming and kind. Everyone was so professional and worked so hard, [and it was] mixed with lots of laughter and fun. I had a good time and loved doing it,” said Sarah Dalton.

“People with intellectual disabilities are told their whole lives what they cannot do and as a result they face a norm of exclusion and low expectation. Special Olympics gives them an opportunity to shatter those stereotypes. Sarah’s appearance on “Power Rangers Dino Fury” is not only a great example of her talent beyond the sports field but represents so much of what inclusion should mean for young people today,” commented Dipak Natali, Regional President and Managing Director of Special Olympics Asia Pacific.

Power Rangers is an iconic brand built on a heritage of great storytelling and merchandising. Launched in 1993 with the debut of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” the franchise today includes movies, TV series, toys and role-play items inspired by Power Rangers.
