Today we received the advance solicitations for Boom! Studios Power Rangers comics coming out in the month of August 2023.
There are MAJOR spoilers below, so be warned!
On Wednesday, May 3rd, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II Issue 5 was released from Boom Studios. Below you will find a preview of the issue as well as the main cover and variants.
FINAL ISSUE. Forbidden alliances collide as radically enhanced, mind blowing Zord combinations battle it out! Reunited friends face Krang as a true force to be reckoned with–but will it be enough to send him back to Dimension X?
Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:
“MMPR / TMNT II Issue 5 drops just shy of three years to the end of the first miniseries back in 2020. A lot has changed in three years: not only has the comics industry (mostly) recovered from the slowdowns of the pandemic, but writer Ryan Parrott and artist Dan Mora are better than they have ever been.
And just like the last miniseries, MMPR / TMNT II has maintained the staples of Power Rangers: fun dialogue, intense fights and quite a few surprises. Also… merchandising. Look, it’s no secret that Power Rangers is all about selling toys. The first mini-series gave us the Turtle Rangers, Shredder’s Green Ranger and a new Tommy and Foot soldier. Now, we get Mutant Rangers and the all new Dimension-X Rangers. Please Hasbro… fast track these to the Lightning Collection!
With the inclusion of General Krang to the mini-series comes the revelation in the miniseries that Dimension-X also had a team of Power Rangers. Rita used the Pink Dimension-X Morpher to turn Casey against all of his friends in the issue, not just a double agent, but fully mind controlled. This brings another layer of battle to an already packed issue. Not only do we get Rita and Casey against the Turtles’ Dimension-X forms, but Krang’s corrupted Dino Megazord versus Green Ranger Shredder’s Dragonzord and Alpha 5, yes, Alpha 5 piloting the Megazord-sized Metalhead!
Dan Mora’s art shines throughout this miniseries, but particularly in this issue. With multiple fights, both large and small, each panel is dynamic and all of the smallest details make every page pop with action. Ryan Parrott’s writing has amazing quips, great characterization and he knows the formula of what makes Power Rangers what it has been for 30 years. However, the formula is almost the same as the end of the previous crossover. You have the Dragonzord and Metalhead right there… you know what’s coming. There is a twist to the mega-sized fight however, with an interesting solution that involves the Mutant Rangers’ abilities and enforces Power Rangers’ biggest lesson: teamwork.
Fortunately, the issue ends with more character interactions and a solidifying friendship of the human and turtle teens. And… an intriguing setup for a THIRD crossover. For those readers that thought April got the short end of the bo-staff this miniseries, don’t worry – Ryan has you covered.
Let’s hope it doesn’t take another three years for the next one…”
