COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Issue 11

On Wednesday, September 9th, Mighty Morphin Issue 11 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown last month.

As the Power Rangers and their new allies, the Eltarian Guardians, prepare to rescue Candice from Lord Zedd, elements of Zordon’s past begin to collide with the present. Will old loyalties and rivalries lead Zordon, and in turn the Power Rangers, into ruin? Or will they be able to right the wrongs of the past and save Earth in the process?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

With last month’s huge reveal that Zophram of Eltar became Lord Zedd, this issue opens up with another flashback directly after those events. I am glad to see that the flashback have shifted to Lord Zedd’s creation. This is as much his story as Zordon’s. I love the art in this flashback because it feels slightly different from the rest of this issue with a darker color scheme from Walter Baiamonte, Katia Ranalli and Sara Antonellini. Marco Renna continues to impress with the visuals. This whole issue visits a number of locations, including an Eltarian ship commanded by Zartus. The details packed into these locations is impressive, as is the rest of the issue artistically.

As seen in the first look, we are also introduced to Sentry Force Four: Zenith, Zero-Zero, Zeta and Zag. These are Supreme Guardian Zartus’ elite unit of warriors. This issue is packed with information and we do get introduced to these characters fairly quickly, but in an effective manner to get to know a bit of their personalities. My personal favorite is Zero-Zero, but I know a lot of people will enjoy Zag as well. You’ll have to read the issue to find out why!

Overall, Ryan Parrott is crafting a real epic with the first year of this story. The next phase, the Eltarian War, starts with issue 13 in November and if this issue is any indication, we are in for some massive developments. I am enjoying the build up now that the pieces are falling into place and seeing where the battle lines are drawn. I can not wait for more!”

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Issue 10

On Wednesday, August 11th, Mighty Morphin Issue 10 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown last month.

Discover Zordon’s ties to Bandora’s Palace on the Moon — the modern home of Rita Repulsa. When an assassin is sent to disrupt the Eltarians’ efforts to protect an ancient weapon, Zordon is injured in the process and his mentor, Zophram, must make a decision that will alter the future of the Power Rangers as we know it!

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Mighty Morphin Issue 10 is unlike the rest of the issues in this series, being a complete flashback to the ongoing story of Zordon’s past. Artist Dan Mora returns to illustrate this milestone issue, so you know it’s a big deal. All of the previous flashbacks have been leading up to this – the origin of one of the greatest villains in Power Rangers.

Writer Ryan Parrott has crafted a bold story, planned from the very beginning of the two new series. In fact, this issue was written over a year ago to accommodate artist Dan Mora’s schedule. With that amount of time, many clues have been built in to preceding issues and once you read this, it will all click into place. While the events of this issue may not be a surprise for some if you have been paying attention, the effect of this story is still impactful and leaves me wanting more.

The return of Dan Mora is welcome, especially for an issue like this. His style is so ingrained into the franchise, not only with Go Go Power Rangers, but recent designs for the ongoing arc. There was no better person to draw this issue. Of course, the colors by Raúl Angulo and Jose Enrique Fernández give the comic life with vibrant color changes between locations that set the mood for each scene.

There’s not much more to say about this issue without giving away all of the surprises, but it is worth reading. After this issue and the focus on Yale for next week’s Power Rangers Issue 10, it will be interesting to dive into the next chapter of this ongoing saga. Highly recommended!”

COMIC REVIEW – Mighty Morphin Issue 9

On Wednesday, July 14th, Mighty Morphin Issue 9 will be released from Boom Studios. A first look of this issue was shown a couple weeks ago.

Will the Power Rangers make the right choice and save Angel Grove? The battle of Angel Grove continues as the team grapples with a seemingly no-win scenario. Will they be able to defeat Lord Zedd and his surprising new ally, or will their home fall into chaos for good?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Mighty Morphin Issue 9 packs a lot of story into one issue, answering some questions I’ve had as a reader from early on in the beginning of the Unlimited Power arc. While not a super action-packed issue, this story delves into the consequences Billy has to face for lying to his team, the fallout of life after the dome surrounding Angel Grove and the imprisonment of Zelya/Candice at the hands of Lord Zedd.

All of this story is exactly what I had been wanting since my review of the last issue, and in rereading the past issues the 3-week time skip is no longer a problem for me.

As seen below, the preview tells another part of Zordon’s past as Zartus confers with a Bandorian to surround the Zeo Crystal with an incantation of the Fire of Truth. This explains more of the Zeo Crystal’s origins as seen in the episode ‘Master Vile and the Metallic Armor’. I love that we have an explanation of Bandora’s Palace from the sentai footage and what we already seen of the Zeo Crystal’s story in the Caves of Deception. More context to the lore of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will be explored in next month’s Mighty Morphin Issue 10 featuring the return of Dan Mora for that issue.

Writer Ryan Parrott delivers many excellent character moments and humor in this issue, touching on all of the main players and side characters. Artist Marco Renna keeps the dialogue heavy issue balanced with great set pieces, interesting close ups and angles, and detailed character art. Walter Baimonte’s (and team’s) colors are bright, with some color gradient backgrounds and fills sprinkled in to emphasize emotion of the character speaking.

Mighty Morphin Issue 9 sets the stage for next month’s lore focused issue with answers people have been waiting for. A must read if you have been keeping up to date!”
