NEWS – First Look at POWER RANGERS #1

Your First Look at POWER RANGERS #1 From BOOM! Studios
Two New Series. Two New Teams. A New Beginning For All Power Rangers Is Here!

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 29, 2020) – BOOM! Studios, under license by Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS), revealed today a first look at POWER RANGERS #1 from superstar writer Ryan Parrott (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), acclaimed artist Francesco Mortarino (Firefly: The Sting), colorist Raúl Angulo (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and letterer Ed Dukeshire (Credits), launching in conjunction with the brand new Mighty Morphin series. Two New Series. Two New Teams. The Era of UNLIMITED POWER begins HERE—and only Lord Drakkon, their greatest enemy, can save the Power Rangers in November 2020!

POWER RANGERS #1 reveals a new cosmic threat that only the original Power Rangers, now known as the Omega Rangers – Jason, Trini and Zack – can hope to defeat! But their secret weapon is… the villainous Lord Drakkon?! Zordon forbids the Omega Rangers from engaging Drakkon, so if they want to save the universe then they’ll have to go rogue – and go up against their Mighty Morphin allies.

Currently, Power Rangers is celebrating 27 continuous years on the air, making it one of the longest running kids’ live-action series in television history with nearly 900 episodes aired to date. Created by Haim Saban and launched in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise celebrates its 27th season, “Power Rangers Beast Morphers” currently airing on Saturdays at 8 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon in the U.S.

COMIC REVIEW – Drakkon New Dawn Issue 3

On Wednesday, October 28th, POWER RANGERS: Drakkon New Dawn Issue 3 will be released from Boom Studios.

FINAL ISSUE! After a devastating loss to the enemy, Kimberly and the remaining Power Rangers must rally their remaining forces in a final stand against Lord Drakkon’s cruel world-ending contingency plan. The Rangers will take on an enemy never before seen in Power Ranger history!

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“What happens to a world split between warring factions? In the face of a much greater evil, can people put aside their differences and work together for a common purpose? Do our past traumas define who we are now?

The final issue of Drakkon New Dawn answers these questions, while leaving a couple more questions on the table. The final panels of this miniseries definitely open up the possibility for more adventures in the world of The Coinless…. sorry, The Shattered. They may have been shattered as a people in the course of the mini-series, but they are not completely broken.

Throughout the issue there is a sense of hope to what the core of Power Rangers should be. How we can be at our best working together as a team. Being a Power Ranger is more than just having powers or a fancy suit. Many characters in this issue learn that lesson, and it almost feels like the episode of Power Rangers In Space, ‘Countdown to Destruction’. Fitting since there is a similar structure in this issue, but with a multiverse twist. The issue also gives off that feeling of triumph and hope, much like Bulk and Skull declaring themselves as Power Rangers in ‘Countdown…’.

This story was never just about Kimberly coming back home to find her place, but how a world on the brink of destruction can still have a chance to heal and rebuild. Very reflective of the state of the world now, and as a commentary – it’s fitting. If there is ever another chance to revisit this part of the Power Rangers universe, I hope that we get more messages like this.”

COMIC REVIEW – POWER RANGERS: SINS OF THE FUTURE

On Wednesday, October 28th, POWER RANGERS: Sins of the Future will be released from Boom Studios. News first broke of this graphic novel back in February, and next week the wait is over! Over the past couple of months BOOM! Studios have given us a first look, a preview earlier this month, and another preview just yesterday!

When Jen returns from the future, she and Wes are attacked by a mysterious stranger who has dire news — the timelines have been altered with deadly consequences and Jen is to blame! The shocking identity of their accuser sets them on a collision path with an enemy they never expected. Can Jen and Wes survive the threats to their pasts, presents and futures? Or will it be the end of everything as they know it?

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Will the our actions in the past define us forever? Is it within our ability to change by looking back at the past? Only if we are willing to make tough choices and commit to them through hard work.

Power Rangers: Sins of the Future is a fascinating story steeped in the lore of Power Rangers Time Force and, by extension, Power Rangers HyperForce. Serving as a sequel to the first and a prequel of the other, Sins of the Future takes place five years after the events of the show in both the past and the future timelines.

Through past previews of the comic, we see that Jen Scotts and Wes Collins are trying to maintain their relationship despite orders from Time Force Command. To Time Force, it’s strictly all business and no pleasure to stop rogue Cyclobots with no master. Jen and Wes have other plans with the time remaining on one particular trip, and it ends in explosive disaster… literally. With the appearance of a new Black Time Force Power Ranger, the mystery is only beginning.

Overall, I enjoyed Power Rangers: Sins of the Future. Writers Matthew Erman and Trey Moore (story by credit) did their homework when writing this, making a satisfying sequel to Power Rangers Time Force that stays true to the continuity of the show. This story slots nicely to explain events that happened in HyperForce, the Power Rangers Ninja Steel crossover ‘Dimensions in Danger’ and even the comics event Shattered Grid.

My note to readers is to take it slow and really pay attention to small details and the dialogue. Otherwise, you may miss small cameos by a few HyperForce characters. Being a show based in time travel, Power Rangers Time Force actually did very little of that. This graphic novel did a complete one-eighty, with timeline changes and glimpses into the past and future of the Power Rangers universe. I would almost suggest watching a few important episodes of Time Force before reading the graphic novel. I admit having to look up a couple characters I forgot about, but overall if you are a huge fan of the series this shouldn’t be a problem.

As for serving as a prequel to HyperForce, it’s ok if you did not watch the online RPG from Hyper RPG. Although faithful watchers of that show will be excited with the references made to the early formation of the branch of Time Force. I was pleased with how the graphic novel opened up for more narrative possibilities in the future.

In regards to the art, Guiseppe Cafaro makes his return from past original graphic novels, Power Rangers: The Psycho Path and Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon. Cafaro continues the wonderfully detailed artwork with rich setting and accurate representation of actor’s likenesses. It seems like BOOM! Studio has made him the official artist for these one shot stories and I hope that trend continues! The colors by Francesco Segala are vibrant, mixed with wonderful effects that bring the art to life and enhance the time effects we see. As always, letterer Ed Dukeshire is a power force for everything Power Rangers, and this issue is no exception.

Power Rangers: Sins of the Future continues the trend of fantastic original graphic novels for the franchise. It’s a shame we get these only once a year, but patience is rewarded with quality. Highly recommended.”

COMIC PREVIEW – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 55

On Wednesday, October 21st, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Issue 55 will be released from Boom Studios.  Earlier this week, we posted the first look of this issue with additional preview pages.

It’s a battle for the ages—the Power Rangers’ THUNDERZORDS vs the Dark Rangers’ TERRORZORDS—and nothing will ever be the same! Plus, the shocking first appearance of the character no Power Rangers fan EVER expected, setting the stage for the upcoming era of UNLIMITED POWER in the brand new series Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers in November 2020.

Host Eric (@trekkieb47) had a chance to read the issue in advance and shares his review:

“Without giving away all of the issue in this (mostly) spoiler-free review, MMPR 55 serves as conclusion to the Dark Rangers mini-arc that started after the end of ‘Necessary Evil’. Since the announcement of the main book being split into two titles going forward, issue 51 through 55 have felt like a breather… and a prelude to the upcoming ‘Unlimited Power’ arc for ‘Mighty Morphin” and ‘Power Rangers’.

These issues have done a great job of setting up the two new series for the next story. The return of Lord Drakkon will play out with the Omega Rangers in ‘Power Rangers’ since the new threat, the Empyreal, are the ones he warned the Rangers about. The new Green Ranger debuts in this issue and has been a plan of Grace and Billy’s, but builds upon the Green Psycho Dagger first seen thirty five issues ago and throughout Beyond the Grid.” The Dark Rangers were a major threat in this issue, and redeem the first team’s awful appearance in the television show. All of these pieces are on the board for the next two series to tackle and the benefit of two titles let’s us focus on both teams of Power Rangers. This is what has me excited, because the switching back and forth the past few issues tested my patience as a reader.

Like I said, issue 55 is totally a prelude to the much hyped ‘Unlimited Power’. The new Green Ranger’s first appearance is explosive, literally, but I can’t help but feel it is a misdirect. We don’t actually find out the identity of the Ranger in this issue. That’s the only spoiler I’ll give, but I would pay very close attention to the conversations Grace has. For months, fans have speculated on the new Green Ranger’s identity and I hope the reveal is very surprising next month. As a conclusion to fifty-five issues of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers? Issue 50 felt like more of a send off to the book as a whole than this one. And with the revelation earlier this week that one of the variants for Mighty Morphin #1 is called a “legacy variant” which continues the old logo and numbering scheme, it definitely drives the point home that this is a continuation of the story, not the ending.

With close to five years of Power Rangers comics, next month’s split feels like a fresh start. I’m looking forward to exploring more conflict with Zordon now that there is a new Power Ranger he had no choice in creating. The Omega Rangers leading their own title and dealing with a galaxy spanning threat is exciting and I can’t wait to explore more of Jason, Trini and Zack’s story on their own series instead of occasionally as side characters. We’re only just getting started…”
